Retired from the US Department of Energy with over 40 years of federal service, Carolyn is an artist and the proud owner of Polly’s Stump African Art Gallery. She has traveled extensively in the US and internationally to locales and countries with African and Afro-Caribbean influence and culture. These include Angola, Senegal, Ghana, South Africa, Equatorial Guinea, Tanzania, Aruba, Jamaica, Belize, Brazil, and the Bahamas.

Throughout Carolyn’s travels, shopping for art, carvings, paintings, sculptures, and drawings that celebrate the diaspora was the highlight of every trip. Her collection of international arts and crafts added a unique feature and authenticity to her gallery. However, New Orleans, LA still remains one of her favorite places to visit and shop for art.

Carolyn was born and raised in California, MD in St. Mary’s County by Joseph R. Thomas, Sr. (deceased) and Catherine “Polly” Thomas. Her parents recognized her artistic talent early on and lovingly nurtured her to become a successful artist and businesswoman. She is a community activist with the NAACP and the Prince George’s County Chapter of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women. She also serves as a mentor to aspiring artists and entrepreneurs.

Carolyn currently lives in Brandywine, MD. She is a proud mother of two beautiful and talented grown daughters, Tammy and Tori, who also reside locally and help as needed in the gallery. Her older sister, Agnes P. Sampson, affectionately known as Trish (deceased), was a major inspiration in naming the gallery after their mother, “Polly.” Carolyn is grateful and blessed for the 24 years and counting of continuous support from her daughters, siblings, family, and friends.
